My initial interest in marine art I am sure, is associated with my ancestry and the fact that my mother's side of the family earned their living from the sea for generations in Vinalhaven and Camden, Maine and Mill Cove, Nova Scotia. My Grandfather, Horace S. Leadbetter, lived in Camden in the Golden Age of yachting (1920's - 1940's) and served aboard many of the well known yachts of that era including: Lyndonia as Quarter Master, Robador IV as Chief Engineer and Wildel as Captain. Many Leadbetters still live in the area and some still work at sea, they are sure to become topics of future works.
My father's ancestors arrived with the founding fathers of the coastline town of Guilford, Connecticut. Family members still live in the Guilford area and enjoy the shoreline and seafood. An example of the Norton artistic abilities may be found on the Genealogy page.
My brother currently sails the Potomac as a member of the Fort Belvior Yacht Club and his boat "Atropos" is represented here with her outstanding tanbark sails.
Most of the watercolors that you will see here are of the Maine coast and Maine boats. In future I hope to add people who work this rugged area and continue to depend upon the sea. I feel it is a legacy and privilege that I have an innate knowledge of both the sea and the people who love and depend on it.
Because of the high resolution required for
