Genealogy art ©
is created in watercolors from information
provided by the client. The unique qualities of these works, which I first
invented for my own use, is the combination
of portraiture and calligraphy to give the viewer all the available information
about the ancestry of the persons pictured and their relationship to one
another. The individuality incorporated in each work makes them very
precious to future
generations.
This combination of portraiture and calligraphy was initiated by Linda to
record her personal ancestry for grandchildren and future generations.
"Although I chose to show past generations and use myself as the youngest,
I could have used myself as the oldest and included my children and
grandchildren." says Linda. " Of course this would entail less
calligraphy and the need to add that as necessary but it is an option".
"The other unique perspective involved is that I used the ladies in the
family, the top line representing my paternal Grandmother
and Great Grandmother and the lower one my Mother and my maternal
Grandmother." This representation is easily followed by maiden names
which have been included before the married name.
"Heritage - The Ladies Line" received an "award of excellence" from Manhattan Arts International magazine "Herstory competition" in 1998.
"The Leadbetter Legacy" is of my
maternal Uncle, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Great
Grandfather," explains Linda. Since the men in this work are
"transparently rendered" and the background can be seen through them, we refer to them as the "family
ghosts" with both humor and love.
Because of the uniqueness of the subject matter these works of necessity are
commissioned. Anyone interested in more information may contact me by email LMNfineart@AOL.com
or telephone(1-207-230-0129). Materials that you would need to supply would
consist of names, dates of birth, death and where buried, (occupation if
desired). I work from photographs in most instances and if they are tin types
would need to know specifics about hair color etc., all of which would be
discussed in depth before work began. Cost is dependent upon size, background
and number of people included.
In some instances it may be impossible to find photographic
records of a particular individual but you may possess a item that they were
affiliated with that could be incorporated into the work as an example of the
heritage they left behind. I am unable to find any record to date of my
Paternal Great Great Grandfather Calvin Henry Norton however I do have a
photograph of a table made by him which implies his artistic bent and adds to
my artistic heritage. As pictured below.
In the near future pages will be added to include the family histories of the Leadbetters, & Young's, (My Maternal Ancestry), Norton's, and Baldwin's (my Paternal Ancestry) Links to organizations whom may be helpful in tracing your ancestry are included on the Linda's Links page of this site.
